Escaping the challenger dilemma in a premium-driven market

With relatively small global volumes, Volvo faced the classic challenger dilemma: in an increasingly investment-heavy automotive industry, profitability depended on moving into the premium tier.

But while Volvo was strongly associated with safety, that positioning alone was no longer distinctive in a market where competitors like Audi, Mercedes-Benz and BMW were equally respected for safety and engineering excellence.

Our mission was to evolve Volvo’s Strategy Execution into a truly premium brand, consistently and credibly across all global markets.

From safety icon to human-centric premium brand

Through extensive quantitative and qualitative research, Eve identified a premium consumer segment with values that differed from traditional luxury buyers yet was large enough to support Volvo’s growth ambitions. Across key markets in the US, Europe, and Asia, Eve uncovered an insight rooted in Volvo’s heritage, competitor weaknesses, and evolving consumer needs.

The insight expanded Volvo’s safety positioning into a broader human-centric philosophy: always “starting with people” when designing cars. While competitors focused on technology for its own sake, Volvo embraced a more driver- and human-centered approach. Deliverables included consumer segmentation, global brand strategy, and organizational implementation support.

"Eve has the rare ability to identify the unique potential in a brand and create customer awareness far beyond its clients’ expectations, time after time."
